Celtic Carving
Love Spoons - Process

English

Welsh

1. After detailed consultation with the client, a suitable piece of timber is hand selected.

2. Again, after detailed consultation, a design is first created on paper.

3. Using carbon paper the design is transferred to the hand selected timber that will be used to make the spoon.

In this case a piece of ash was selected but was split (see top left). This was taken into consideration while planning the spoon.

4. Holes are drilled and excess wood starts to be removed.

5. Much of the excess wood is removed with a fret or coping saw.

6. At this stage the wood is still very thick - up to 2 inches in some cases. This allows for the bowl to be carved and the spoon given a curved back.

7. Carving starts and the spoon begins to get the required profile.

8. Keith doing some early carving on a spoon..

9. Carving continues and details are added.

10. If required, wooden chains are carved. For anniversaries, each link represents a year.

11. After much sanding and polishing the spoon is given the required finish and is now complete.
